Deterministic and Probabilistic Rainfall Onset Forecast The Gu 2025 rains are likely to start over Awdal and Maroodijeex regions in the third week of April. It will then spread eastern parts of the country like Togdheer region in the fourth week of April. Onset is not likely until the last week of April in Sool and Sanaag regions. Based on climatology, the probabilistic forecast of onset is mixed with chances of being early over Awdal region, late over Sanaag region and normal over the rest of Somaliland.

Varying rainfall patterns were observed across Somaliland during the Deyr 2024 season with notable differences in total rainfall amounts and their impacts on the environment, agriculture, and livelihoods. The season began with peak in October, tapering off in December in many regions. While some areas experienced favorable total rainfall, others recorded significantly lower totals compared to the Long-Term Mean (LTM). Hargeisa experienced substantial rainfall, reaching 6 times the (LTM). The onset of Dayr rains occurred in early October the rains initially spread across central and eastern parts of Somaliland but ended in sharp early December, with no rainfall recorded in December. In most regions observed more than 30 consecutive dry days between November 1st and December 31st, 2024.

Rainfall Forecast (04-10 December 2024) For the upcoming week, the NOAA-NCEP GFS model forecasts mostly dry conditions in most parts of Somaliland with chances of isolated light rainfall expected in eastern and northern parts of Lasqorey district, northern and eastern parts of Taleex district and northwestern parts of Berbera district. While these areas are likely to receive cumulative rainfall of up to 10 mm, most of the country will remain dry. Light rainfall between 5.0 mm to 10.0 mm is expected in the northwestern parts of Berbera district in Saaxil region, northern and eastern parts of Taleex district in Sool region and eastern and northern parts of Laasqorey in Sanaag region. Dry conditions are expected likely to prevail in other parts of Somaliland.
